Important Press Release 14 July

Boksburg School of Specialisation Launches to Empower and Transform Struggling Youth

Johannesburg, Date:  On the 27th of July, 2023, Oosrand Secondary School will be launched as a School of Specialisation by the Gauteng Department of Education. This initiative is part of the department’s strategy to foster excellence in education and provide students with specialised skills aligned with the economic needs of the region.

The concept of Schools of Specialisation was introduced by the Gauteng Department of Education in 2016 with the aim of nurturing top talent, creating opportunities for learners and revitalizing township economies. As part of this strategy, five types of schools were identified: Maths, Science and ICT, Engineering, Arts, Sports, and Commerce and Entrepreneurship. These schools will serve as hubs for developing future leaders and role models.

To ensure the success of these schools, partnerships with industry, the community and NGOs are critical. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), under the leadership of MEC Matome Chiloane, continues to drive this strategic thrust, building upon the efforts of the previous MEC, Gauteng Premier Panyasi Lesufi.

With 35 schools in the province currently recognised as Schools of Specialisation, Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation  becomes the 24th and, more significantly, the first to focus on uplifting the youth which includes a large  coloured community and learners from surrounding informal settlements.

Marketplace Academy NPO (MPA), led by CEO Chantyl Mulder, says that it is thrilled that the GDE has picked Oosrand Seconadary School as its next focus.

Since its establishment in 2022, MPA has played a vital role in revitalising communities by fostering the growth of essential skills, with a particular emphasis on the Reiger Park community. Situated in the vicinity of Oosrand Secondary School, this area confronts significant socio-economic obstacles such as poverty, persistent unemployment across generations and high crime rates.

Says Mulder, “At Marketplace Academy, we believe in the power of education and collaboration to uplift communities and create economic opportunities. Our partnership with Oosrand Secondary School and the Gauteng Department of Education will empower students with specialised skills in Commerce and Entrepreneurship, particularly in the vibrant sectors of Tourism and Hospitality.”

Recognising the growth opportunities in sectors such as Digital and ICT, Agriculture, Artisan Programs, Tourism and Hospitality, and Commerce and Entrepreneurship, MPA has partnered with anchor, delivery and implementation partners in these areas to support Oosrand as a Commerce and entrepreneurship School of Specialisation. The collaboration between industry standards and academic integrity forms the foundation of their initiatives.

“Working closely with Oosrand Entrepreneurship and Commerce School of Specialisation , its principal Peter Arendse, the School Governing Body and the school’s Senior Management Team, MPA has developed a unique public-private partnership model. Our pilot initiative, focusing on Commerce and Entrepreneurship with an emphasis on Tourism and Hospitality, represents an important milestone for the community,” adds Chairman of the MPA Board, Professor Wiseman Nkhulu.

“We are delighted that The Gauteng Department of Education has selected Oosrand Entrepreneurship and Commerce SoS  as a pioneer in this programme, aiming to develop a blueprint that can be replicated in other schools across the province. Through the collaboration of GDE, the school, MPA, and the community, this initiative seeks to pave the way for the expansion of further specialised schools throughout Gauteng.”

The launch event on the 27th of July 2023 will celebrate this milestone and mark the beginning of a new era for Oosrand Entrepreneurship and Commenrce SoS and the community of Boksburg.
